Notable Tributes

We join our American friends in mourning the loss of their former President Jimmy Carter. The US has lost a committed fighter for democracy. The world has lost a great mediator for peace in the Middle East and for human rights. 

He was a leader who served during a time when Ukraine was not yet independent, yet his heart stood firmly with us in our ongoing fight for freedom 

Former President Carter was the driving force behind the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, and made important contributions to the development of China-U.S. relations and the friendly exchanges and cooperation between the two countries. 

President Jimmy Carter achieved historic accomplishments through his tireless efforts not only during his presidency but throughout his life in peace diplomacy, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I renew my deep respect for President Carter, who contributed significantly to strengthening the amicable Japan-US relations and to maintaining peace and stability in the international community. 

Condolences to the people and government of the United States, especially to the family and loved ones of President James Carter. Our people will remember with gratitude his efforts to improve relations, his visits to Cuba and his statement in favor of the freedom of the (Cuban) Five. 

We are saddened by the news of the passing of former US President Jimmy Carter. Our condolences to his family, the President and the American People. The Sudanese will never forget the contribution of The Carter Center and its efforts to promote human rights, social development and combat poverty and disease. May he rest in peace. 

His Holiness Pope Francis was saddened to learn of the death of former President Jimmy Carter and offers heartfelt condolences. Recalling President Carter’s firm commitment, motivated by deep Christian faith, to the cause of reconciliation and peace between peoples, the defense of human rights and the welfare of the poor and those in need, the Holy Father commends him to the infinite mercies of Almighty God and prays for the consolation of all who mourn his loss. 

President Carter lived a truly meaningful life, with decades of untiring efforts to help the poor and downtrodden, to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts, and to advance democracy and human rights throughout the world. To have remained active over the course of such a long life set an example to us all of how to live our lives in the service of others. The Nobel Committee recognized his contribution to the welfare of humanity when it bestowed the Nobel Peace Prize on him in 2002. 

In addition, the Tibetan people and I remain ever grateful to President Carter for his deep interest in and concern for the situation in Tibet and for undertaking initiatives to help alleviate the plight our people. 

As the only American president thus far to come from Georgia, he showed the world the impact our state and its people have on the country. And as a son of Plains, he always valued Georgians and the virtues of our state, choosing to return to his rural home after his time in public office.  

I am deeply saddened by the passing of President Jimmy Carter, a true servant leader and an enduring symbol of compassion, courage, and integrity. ... I am so proud that President Carter’s legacy will continue to endure here in Atlanta through the Carter Center.
