I join fellow leaders in mourning the loss of former US President Jimmy Carter and celebrating his remarkable century of devoted service to his country and humanity.
To my mind, what stands out most about him was his willingness to defy the conventional wisdom of America’s political elites on the most crucial matters of war and peace — whether it was on dialogue with Cuba, championing the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, or decrying the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
His Holiness Pope Francis was saddened to learn of the death of former President Jimmy Carter and offers heartfelt condolences. Recalling President Carter’s firm commitment, motivated by deep Christian faith, to the cause of reconciliation and peace between peoples, the defense of human rights and the welfare of the poor and those in need, the Holy Father commends him to the infinite mercies of Almighty God and prays for the consolation of all who mourn his loss.
President Carter lived a truly meaningful life, with decades of untiring efforts to help the poor and downtrodden, to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts, and to advance democracy and human rights throughout the world. To have remained active over the course of such a long life set an example to us all of how to live our lives in the service of others. The Nobel Committee recognized his contribution to the welfare of humanity when it bestowed the Nobel Peace Prize on him in 2002.
In addition, the Tibetan people and I remain ever grateful to President Carter for his deep interest in and concern for the situation in Tibet and for undertaking initiatives to help alleviate the plight our people.
