James Earl Carter Jr.

1924-2024

39th President of the United States

Notable Tributes

We invite you to read notable tributes in memory of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

President Carter lived a truly meaningful life, with decades of untiring efforts to help the poor and downtrodden, to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts, and to advance democracy and human rights throughout the world. To have remained active over the course of such a long life set an example to us all of how to live our lives in the service of others. The Nobel Committee recognized his contribution to the welfare of humanity when it bestowed the Nobel Peace Prize on him in 2002.

In addition, the Tibetan people and I remain ever grateful to President Carter for his deep interest in and concern for the situation in Tibet and for undertaking initiatives to help alleviate the plight our people.

Jimmy Carter was a United States President, a U.S. Navy veteran, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, and a humanitarian who dedicated his life to promoting peace, democracy, and human rights.

Throughout decades of public service, President Carter embodied integrity, compassion, and a commitment to advancing the freedom, security, and welfare of others. He channeled that spirit in his foreign policy, from negotiating the return of the Panama Canal to its host nation, to developing arms control agreements with the Soviet Union. And he brought it to his every exchange and conversation, from heads of state to ordinary citizens.

Today, the thoughts of Americans and the prayers of Congress are lifted up on behalf of the Carter family. President Carter’s story was one of humble beginnings, and his life is a testament to the boundless opportunities available in this great nation. Because of his work in brokering the Camp David Accords and his advocacy with Habitat for Humanity, the world is a more peaceful place, and more Americans have a place to call home. No one can deny that President Carter led an extraordinary life of service to his country. May he rest in peace.

— Mike Johnson Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

If we had 10 more Jimmy Carters, maybe our world would be a different place today.

My hero Jimmy Carter was a peacemaker, a public servant, a man of faith, a devoted partner to Rosalynn—and a Guinea worm’s worst nightmare. I knew him best as a global health advocate and deeply admired his dedication to taking on diseases that impact the world’s poorest people, like Guinea worm disease.

When President Carter left office, there were more than 3.5 million cases of this painful, debilitating disease around the world each year. This year, thanks in no small part to the work of the Carter Center, that number was down to single digits. He dreamed of outliving the last Guinea worm—and came incredibly close.

Elaine and I join the Senate and the nation in mourning the passing of our 39th president, Jimmy Carter.

President Carter served during times of tension and uncertainty, both at home and abroad. But his calm spirit and deep faith seemed unshakeable. Jimmy Carter served as our commander-in-chief for four years, but he served as the beloved, unassuming Sunday school teacher at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia for forty. And his humble devotion leaves us little doubt which of those two important roles he prized the most.

— Mitch McConnell United States Senator

President Carter was one of my heroes, the embodiment of faith coming alive through the noble work of public service. His life’s project was human dignity and his long life will be outmatched only by the length of his legacy. Well done, good and faithful servant. Well done.

— Rev. Raphael Warnock U.S. Senator from Georgia

The Department of Defense mourns the loss of President Jimmy Carter at age 100—a principled leader, America's longest-lived president, a great son of Georgia, a steadfast champion of human rights and democratic ideals, and a sailor in the U.S. Navy.

— Lloyd J. Austin III Defense Secretary

Today we have lost a singular figure in American history. The world has lost a tireless advocate for peace, hope, and healing. There has never been a president or a former president quite like Jimmy Carter.

— Dan Rather Former CBS News Anchor

The Atlanta Braves are deeply saddened by the passing of President Jimmy Carter. President Carter was a testament to the best America, and Georgia, can produce. He served both his country and home state with honor his entire life. While the world knew him as a remarkable humanitarian and peacemaker, we knew him as a dedicated Braves fan and we will miss having him in the stands cheering on his Braves. Our deepest condolences to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

— David Axelrod Former Presidential Advisor

As the only American president thus far to come from Georgia, he showed the world the impact our state and its people have on the country. And as a son of Plains, he always valued Georgians and the virtues of our state, choosing to return to his rural home after his time in public office.

— Brian Kemp Governor of Georgia
